New Summer Hobby

What am I doing to kill time this summer? Not much. Most of my time recently is spent mixing and editing a live video shot on May 29th, finishing a mix and master for band Fresh Heir , and working on the overall advancement of my music career. When I get a free minute I try and work on some songs in progress. But when I AM looking to kill time, I rent a James Bond movie to fulfill one of my summer goals- watch all the movies in the James Bond series. Here's how I stack up so far this summer:

  1. Dr. No No
  2. From Russia With Love Yes
  3. Goldfinger Yes
  4. Thunderball Yes
  5. You Only Live Twice Yes
  6. On Her Majesty's Secret Service No
  7. Diamonds Are Forever Yes
  8. Live and Let Die No
  9. The Man with the Golden Gun No
  10. The Spy Who Loved Me Yes
  11. Moonraker Yes
  12. For Your Eyes Only Yes and it blew
  13. Octopussy Yes
  14. A View to a Kill No
  15. The Living Daylights No
  16. Licence to Kill No
  17. GoldenEye Yes
  18. Tomorrow Never Dies Unfortunately Yes
  19. The World is Not Enough No
  20. Die Another Day Yes and I found it entertaining. Terrible film though
  21. Casino Royale No
  22. Quantum of Solace No
Why am I sharing this useless information? Because rendering sucks. Shout out to my video editors out there.

I Watched the X-Men Trilogy Today.

I know it's kinda dorky, whatever. That shit chokes me up. Damn.

I always get a little pissed after I watch X3. I don't want to be a hater, but I do like to be a critic- Brett Ratner (director of X3) f'ed up. Bryan Synger did a great job on 1 and 2, and I'm a little disappointed he gave it up to direct Superman. I'm sure there was a lot of money involved, but it couldn't have been that much more money than X-Men. X3 was one of the top grossing opening weekends of all time, after all. He seemed really into the first 2 movies and spent years on them, I don't understand how he could leave it all that work behind. Well, whatever. He turned down X3 and, after a bunch of other directors turned it down, the movie went to Brett Ratner, the genius behind a lot of music videos and the Rush Hour trilogy- awesome. I think the best work I've seen from this guy is the music video for "Just Like Me" by Jamie Foxx. That's how good he is. Anyway. . .I actually do like the general outline of the plot, but it seems like the final product was just thrown together leaving several things seeming like an after thought. One of my biggest annoyances with the film is the completely under developed and uneffective character of Angel. I get what he was supposed to accomplish, but the anti-mutant father with the mutant son card got played in X2 and the "you're afraid of me but, in the end, I'll save you anyway" is the theme of the X-Men in general. So that was a waste of the 90 seconds that Angel is in the film. I'm also annoyed by the Kitty/Bobby/Rogue love triangle. Bobby and Kitty flirting with Rogue getting jealous is a recurring theme throughout the movie and then suddenly it disappears. This is a situation between 3 main characters and everyone just forgets about it? Did you forget about that story line Brett Ratner? Too busy thinking of special effects sequences to make sure the plot is cohesive?

Just for fun- X-Men Origins: Wolverine in a few words- Fighting. Special Effects. Action. Explosions. Plot Twists. Cliches. Cheese. Comedy. Yeah, that pretty much sums it up.

Along for the Ride #2

Here's a recording of my first time rehearsing the new song "Time Running Out" with the band. It's just a three piece for the next show, Dave Shanle will be spending some quality time with his brother who was just discharged from the military. I'm sick and it's the first Andrew and Kevin have played the song, so it's not perfect. That's what this is about anyway, the developmental timeline from conception to finished product.

Along for the Ride #1

Here's a song I'm finished with writing and now I'm working on demoing at home. I like it a lot, it hits exactly what I'd like to sound like right now. What I've put up here is the chorus of the demo as it is today, 2/22/09. The chorus is out of context lyrically without the verse, so I'll fill you in. I wrote this song after Obama was elected and all these people were talking about he's our "savior" or "the antichrist," but he's just a guy who hopefully is as genuinely good as he seems. Anyway, this song IS NOT about politics, but that, among other things, put these lyrics in motion in my mind. This song is about escaping people talking all this stuff and trying to make you choose sides on all these issues that, in the big picture, don't really matter. So if we could find "A Place Where We Could Go" where we could be away from all the issues and enjoy ourselves, that would be cool. This place could be literal or just be a state of mind, whatever makes the song work more for you. So this song presents that idea and invites others to join in on finding that place. I'm thinking about calling the next album "Strength in Numbers," because most of the songs I have going have a sense of reaching out to people, trying to find someone that feels the way you feel. I suppose in some ways that's what art is anyway.

Come Along for the Ride

If you're reading this you've probably realized that I have an album out. This just recently came out and we won't be heavily promoting it until the summer (but get it right now if you like it :D). But, since I roll like that, I'm working on my follow up to "Save Yourself" and I'd like to keep you up to date on the process, if you're interested. I will be periodically leaving posts letting you hear some of my new music, from the first recordings in my bedroom to stuff from the real studio. Speaking of new music, check out my current album if you haven't yet:
